David Benson passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on October 26, 2024, surrounded by
family and loved ones. He was born on September 27, 1954 in Springfield IL to parents Robert
and Mary (Shaunessy) Benson.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kimberly Benson, son Maxwell Benson, step-daughter
Kylie Koenig, step-daughter Lindsey Cox, step-daughter Jessica Stubbs, bonus daughter Taylor
Somerfield, granddaughters Summer Kennedy, Olivia Kennedy, bonus granddaughter Everly
Somerfield, as well as several others who considered him a second dad and grandfather. He is
also survived by his sister Debbie Veon (husband Ken), brother Dan Benson, brother Don
Benson, several nieces and nephews, father and mother-in-law Stan and Judy Underwood,
brother and sister-in-law Tom and Diana Beyer, as well as his beloved dog Charli.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Benson, sister Linda Groesch, and
sister Janice Phares.
David was a graduate of St. Theresa High School in Decatur and received an Associates degree
from Eastern Illinois University. He was a beloved sales and finance manager in the car and
motorsports industries for over 40 years.
David was a selfless man who always put his family first, and he loved them deeply and
unconditionally. He had a passion for life, golf, and music, and was always quick with a funny
story or joke to keep us all laughing. He was a loyal friend to many. He never met a stranger
and was always quick to help a friend or neighbor with anything.
He made a public confession of his faith in baptism and was looking forward to the day he
would see his Lord and Savior, Jesus.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Koke Mill Christian Church at
475 S. Koke Mill Rd, Springfield, IL 62711. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with
service starting at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to
Samaritan’s Purse. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family in the care of
