Veronica Berry

Mrs. Veronica Berry, 69, passed away peacefully at Decatur Memorial Hospital on January 14, 2025, with her daughter Etisha Wells by her side.

She was born September 10, 1955, in Chicago to the late James Pope and Gussie Hobson-Pope. She is preceded in death by her father James Pope, her mother Gussie Hobson-Pope, two brothers Walter and Edward, her daughter Nicole Renee Wells (Nicky), husband Foy Berry, Grandmother Mary Dillard–affectionately known as Moma Shortly.

She is survived by her daughters Etisha and Heather Wells of King, North Carolina, her first true love and father her children Dwight Wells of Leland, North Carolina, three brothers James Pope, Robert Johnson Sr. and James Flint as well as bonus mom Erma Pope, three special nephews she had a hand in raising–Robert Johnson Jr. (Tu-Tu)., Edward Pope (Lil-Kirk) and Ryon Johnson plus a whole host of friends, family and Godchildren that she loved almost as much as she loved General Hospital.

If General Hospital was on–unless it was an emergency–you better not call her.

Veronica was a big personality in a small package.

She had an impact on each person she interacted with and was courageous, inspirational, kind, loving, funny, full of joy, a ball of fire that showed us what can be accomplished with determination and persistence. She lived her life to the fullest, despite her challenges. Her greatest accomplishments were the gift of being a great mom to Etisha.

Veronica will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Veronica loved numbers. In the past, you could find her at a casino or somewhere playing the lottery. Anytime anyone had new numbers associated with them such as address, license plate, etc., she wanted those numbers because she felt like surely they would hit.

Veronica loved old TV shows the main one being Andy Griffith. On one of her many visits to North Carolina we took her to Mt. Airy and locked her up in the Mayberry Jail–and yes–we have pictures to prove it! She loved it, she said it felt like she was really in the show!

Veronica spent her mornings with a hot cup of tea and a cigarette and didn’t care who liked it or didn’t.

She was a rare combination of someone who had a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important–the simplicity of living life with those you love. Family was the most important thing to her and she made sure they all felt loved. At Veronica’s request, no funeral services will be held. The family is planning a memorial on Veronica’s birthday.
