Ilse K. Nunn

Ilse K. Nunn, 94, passed away peacefully at home on May 5, 2025, after a brief illness. She was born December 15, 1930, in Swindemunde, Germany, to Edmund and Emilie Kalmering.

She survived a bombing attack on her hometown in 1945 when she was 14 years old, which influenced her the rest of her life.

She met the love of her life, Howard, B. Nunn, while he was serving in the Army in Germany. They married and were parents of three daughters: Angel S. Hope of Springfield, Ursula S. Polk deceased (Freddy Polk), of Lansing, Kansas, and Dr. Sandra Owens (Vance Owens) of Covington, Georgia.

Ilse is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-laws, four grandchildren Jessica Polk, John Polk, Rachel Owens and Ryan Largeman, two great-grandchildren Kiera and Legend, and her siblings in Germany: Edmund, deceased (Gerda) Kalmering, Ursula (Kurt-deceased) Fitzau, Siegfried Kalmering (deceased), Winfried (Magda) Kalmering, Elke (Siegfried-deceased) Rudek, and Uwe (Renate-deceased) Kalmering.

Ilse’s joys in life were being a supportive Army wife and caring for her family in multiple tours of duty stateside, Germany and Turkey, as well as passing out chocolates to neighbors and her healthcare providers, and walking and giving high quality dog treats to neighborhood dogs and cats.

She was passionate about educating herself and loved reading 30 books a month. She endured many hardships in her long life, thanks to her tenacity and hardworking work ethic. She loved caring for others, and she loved the Lord. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and her smile, integrity and determination will be sorely missed.

After cremation, she will be buried next to her beloved deceased husband in the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at a future date in a private family service.
