Delbert Wheeler

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Delbert Harrison Wheeler, a devoted husband, loving father, proud papa, and cherished friend, who passed away on July 19, 2025 at the age of 75.

Delbert was born on October 11, 1949 in Breeding, Kentucky to Zora Helen Furkins and Harrison Mitchell Wheeler. He lived a life marked by stories and service. Delbert built a fulfilling life with his beloved wife, Barbara Lynn Wheeler, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage, beginning on March 8, 1969. Together, they raised two children: Del Laverne Wheeler and Joseph Mitchell Wheeler.

As a father, Delbert was always ready to impart wisdom and entertain through story telling. His three granddaughters (Kristen Bretscher, Samantha Woods, and Arabella Wheeler) and one great-granddaughter (Addison Bretscher) brought him immeasurable joy. He deeply loved and cared for his family.

He bravely served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971, where he demonstrated extraordinary strength, resilience, and honor. His time in the military shaped his sense of duty and self, which he carried with him throughout his life. He was deeply patriotic, always honoring those who served and cherishing the freedoms this country provides.

Delbert will be remembered as a friend to all. He never failed to provide a quick smile or long tale. A short call would turn into an afternoon well spent as two friends laughed and shared memories. When not talking with friends, Delbert could be found collecting knives and guns or playing with their dog, Rascal.

Delbert Wheeler is survived by his wife Barbara Lynn Wheeler; his sons Del Wheeler (Nikki) and Joseph Wheeler (Amy); his granddaughters Kristen Bretscher (Michael), Samantha Woods (Isaiah), and Arabella Wheeler; great-granddaughter Addison Bretscher; and many beloved extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by parents Zora Helen Furkins and Harrison Mitchell Wheeler, along with Harrison’s second wife Marcella June Wheeler; brother Justin Wheeler; and sister Linda Sexton.

A service to celebrate Delbert’s life will be held on August 16th at 11:00am at Auburn Christian Church in Auburn, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local charity of choice in his memory.
