Bruce Keith passed away surrounded by his family on the evening of April 29, 2026, at his childhood home in Decatur, IL.
Bruce was born on December 22, 1961, in Decatur, IL, the son of Donald and Elizabeth. Bruce graduated from Western Washington University with a B.A. and an M.A. and later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska, where he met his wife, Kate.
Bruce loved running, hiking, gardening, traveling, and his work. Bruce’s passion for running began in high school, and he continued running into adulthood, completing 14 marathons, including the Boston Marathon and his favorite, the New York City Marathon. In addition to running, Bruce loved hiking, a passion that developed during his time in Washington. He loved to explore trails in New York’s Hudson Valley and throughout the Adirondack mountains. When not running or hiking, Bruce preferred to remain outdoors and enjoyed landscaping and gardening in his backyard. Bruce loved learning about other cultures and traveling the world. His favorites included Japan, France, and Ethiopia, where he lived for 6 years before moving back home to Decatur, IL.
Bruce studied sociology and went on to become a professor. He was an accomplished scholar, teacher, and mentor. Following a stint on the faculty at West Virginia University, Bruce joined the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he served for almost 23 years, becoming the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and later Professor of Sociology in the Department of Systems Engineering. A prolific scholar with an intellectual range, he published works addressing divorce and children; water preservation in Ethiopia, Ghana, and the Nile River Valley; the sociology of knowledge; leadership development; curricular matters; college prestige; and undergraduate performance outcomes. Likewise, he taught a range of courses from Mathematics to Sociology to Systems Engineering. Always fearless, his fall 2001 Social Inequality class was featured in the New York Times as the only NYC field trip not canceled in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Likewise, he lent his expertise to creating capacities for others to shine, including consulting work on the ground in Afghanistan, Albania, Qatar, Niger, and Iraq.
Bruce received many work-related accolades, including the United States Secretary of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service—the highest award conferred on a civilian by the Secretary.
Surviving him are his wife, Kate of Somers, NY; children, Barbara (Cameron) of Ossining, NY, and Mary of New York, NY; and brothers James Keith of Maroa, IL and John Keith of Omaha, NE and their families.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth.
A private remembrance will be held by his family in Central Park in New York City.
