Doug “Nott, Nott Head” Nottingham, age 73, of Assumption, IL, passed away October 11, 2024 with his family by his side. He was born on October 14, 1950 in Mattoon, IL to Homer Sr. and Hazel “Mert” (Wheeler) Nottingham.
Doug graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1969. He was enlisted into the United States Army from 1970-1972. His career in factory work began with nearly a decade at Borg-Warner in Decatur in the 70’s, a decade at GSI in Assumption in the 80’s, a few years at Trailmobile in Charleston in the 90’s, and a final few decades at GSI until he retired in August 2016.
As a pitcher, Doug’s fastpitch softball career began in the Army where he played competitively at a National level. He was a fierce pitcher for several Illinois Amateur Softball Association Class A and AA teams in Central IL including Decatur Perfect Window Cleaners and Assumption. His nearly 20 year softball career is decorated by countless awards and two inductions into the IL ASA Hall of Fame.
Preceded in death by: his mother and father; brother Homer “Junior” Nottingham Jr.; and grandson Jake Henschen.
Survived by: his wife of 20 years, Cathy (Henn) Nottingham; son Sean (Stacy) Nottingham; daughter Cassie (Ryan) Bishop; step-son Bob (Jennifer) Horsthemke Jr.; step-daughter Angie (Chuck) Smith; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother Steve (Mary) Nottingham; sister Martha “Marti” (Randy) Macari; brother Jeff (Eve) Nottingham; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 16, 2024 from 11AM-4PM at the Shelbyville VFW Post 4829, 513 S. Cedar St., Shelbyville, IL 62565. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post
