Jim was born in Mattoon, Illinois, on August 17, 1953, to James and Wanda Armstrong.

Jim was a graduate of Mattoon High School. He worked at Anamet and the Champaign Sportsman Club for many years. Jim loved the outdoors. He spent many days doing outdoor activities such as camping and going to Charleston Speedway. Jim also had a creative side. He thoroughly enjoyed writing poetry, creating model cars, and listening to folk music. His favorite artist was Bob Dylan.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children Lisa McKinney (Doug) of Westfield IL, and Jamie Rich (Laura) of Casey IL, grandchildren Kaitlyn McKinney and David Drake, siblings Karen Patrick of Harrisburg Or., Linda Gelsinger (Glenn) of Mason IL, and Bonnie and John Armstrong of Mattoon IL, along with many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Chriss (Brault) Armstrong, sister Sandy Wyatt and brother Robert Armstrong.

A graveside service will be at a later date along with a celebration of life.
