Phyllis Ann (Dulaney) Sunderland, 79, of Pana, IL (formerly of Blue Mound, IL) was called home to God’s celestial shore on Sunday, July 12, 2026, surrounded by family.

She was born on January 7, 1947, in Flora, IL to James and Martha (Hough) Dulaney. She was raised in Flora alongside her three brothers and one sister. She married Howard E. Sunderland on August 4, 1961, in Louisville, IL. Together they loved and raised five children.

Her family will cherish memories of her sewing clothes and costumes for us, all of her little craft projects and ceramic painting parties. How she felt the need to spray paint every piece of patio furniture teal (her favorite color). We will smile every time we think of how she could spot a rummage sale or resale shop from miles away. Forever in our hearts will be family camping trips when she always had a “worsh rag” around her neck to keep her cool and how she always made “skillet toast” for breakfast. We will never forget how she would tap her feet and clap her hands to her favorite country songs, especially anything sung by her son Jerry. We will never be able to duplicate her cooking. She will forever be remembered for her ham salad, goulash, homemade pizza, bean salad, spaghetti, vegetable soup, potato salad, sugar cookies, divinity, pineapple upside down cake, peanut butter fudge, and lemon meringue pie. She always added her secret ingredient…love. She loved to offer food and drink to anyone who walked through her door. If you stopped by, you became family. She genuinely loved to serve others and knew how to make a house a home.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, three sons: Mark (Cheryl) Sunderland of Mt. Zion, Tim (Carla) Sunderland of Corydon, IN, Jerry (Lorie) Sunderland of Macon, daughter Julie (Lonny, her favorite son-in-law) Bonn of Blue Mound, and daughter-in-law Jenny Eson of Blue Mound. One brother Donald “Abe” (Cheryl) Dulaney of Flora and one sister Debbie (Rodney) Payne of Cisne, IL, sister-in-law Linda Dulaney of Flora, sister-in-law Zelda Dulaney of Louisville, IL, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: James “Jake” Dulaney and William “Buck” Dulaney and her son John Sunderland.

Services announced at a later date.
